Frontline Leadership: Supervisory Training
Frontline leadership is, in many ways, the most important job in any organization. Research continually reinforces the fact that frontline supervisors are integral to employee satisfaction, engagement, and subsequent retention. As the Gallup Organization states, "People join an organization. They leave a supervisor."
To help create an atmosphere where employees stay and thrive, we are excited to offer the following two programs. Taken together, these satisfy the statutory five-day core training requirements for all classified supervisors.
This program, delivered in a blend of online and in-person training, gives new supervisors knowledge of the rules, processes, and procedures needed to navigate the environment within the state colleges and universities system. “New supervisors” are defined as any person in the MnSCU system with direct supervisory responsibility over other people – whether you are new to our system, or new to being a supervisor.
The first step is your automatic enrollment in the online module, presented through D2L. These modules include information that new supervisors need to know right away, such as ethics, leaves, and harassment. Additional topics in the online modules are safety, workers’ compensation, data practices and diversity, among others. You will receive login information directly from the D2L administrator.
The in-person training, which is taken upon completion of the online modules, enhances the online training by offering a day of experiential learning focusing on contract issues and ethical dilemmas. The cost for this program is $169 per person, which includes all online and in-person instruction and materials, and continental breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack on the in-person date.
Purchase orders should be faxed to the attention of Cindy Schneider at 651-297-3145 prior to the start date of training and should include Office of the Chancellor vendor #0000215893-001, the date of the session(s) you are attending and your name.

Participants will learn these skills in an interactive and energizing environment.

For more focused supervisory development, the following Lab classes are offered regionally throughout the state. All classes can be found in STARS, under Regional Development Labs.
NOTE: The schedule for the remainder of 2011 and early 2012 will be available soon.
Effective Coaching: Do you remember a formal or informal coach who truly helped you in your development? What was it about this person that made a difference? As supervisors, it is easy to get lost in the day-to-day shuffle of directing work and handling your own duties. This session will give you an opportunity to learn and reflect on how to be a coach who truly develops your employees. Special emphasis will be given to hands-on practice and discussion of techniques that have worked in coaching good performance, poor performance, and everything in between.
Conducting Effective Performance Reviews: The performance evaluation often gets a bad name. It may be seen as just one more piece of paperwork to complete. When done well, however, the performance evaluation is a powerful performance management tool that can help keep your work unit running smoothly. It is also required by state law, and for good reason. People generally want to know how they are doing. Besides ongoing coaching and feedback, the performance evaluation gives you a formal opportunity to sit down with your employee for an interactive discussion about progress and future plans.
Managing Change and Transition: In this highly interactive seminar, you will learn how to successfully move yourself and your team through the human side of change. Focusing on a change you or your team is experiencing, apply what you are learning in real time, share techniqures that worked and learn from other.
