Workers' Compensation Injuries Occurring Outside of the Corvel Network Coverage Area
Corvel is the certified managed care plan for the State of Minnesota's workers' compensation program. Their network of providers covers Minnesota, and some border areas in Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Initial evaluation and treatment of work related injuries and illnesses must be received from the managed care clinic designated by the employer for the employee's work location.
Employees may sustain work related injuries or illnesses while outside of the network coverage area, as in the case of out of state or international work assignments. In these instances:
- As soon as the need for an out of state or international work assignment is known, the employee should be advised in advance to seek emergency medical care when needed at the closest available medical facility.
- The employee must report the injury/illness to his/her immediate supervisor or alternate campus designee as soon as possible following the occurrence of the work related incident or illness.
- The supervisor or campus designee will conduct an accident investigation by interviewing the employee and any parties who have been identified as witnesses to the incident.
- The supervisor or the campus designee will follow campus procedures for the completion and submission of the First Report of Injury Form and notification of the campus Workers' Compensation Coordinator.
- The campus Workers' Compensation Coordinator will notify Corvel of the name and address of the facility where the injured employee is treating. As treatment will be outside of the Corvel network, this "unauthorized" provider will need special handling to be recorded as the treating physician for this injury.
- Corvel will assist in coordinating the employee's medical care outside the coverage area and will assist the employee in making arrangements for any additional treatments that may be necessary upon the employee's return to the coverage area.
